Despite the abundance of iconic female artists in today’s music scene, the vast majority of songs we hear are still written by men.

A recent U.S. study estimates that 95% of all music in the public domain is composed by men. In the UK, the latest data from PRS (the official body that pays royalties to composers and songwriters) shows that 81.7% of its members are men.

This stark imbalance is why we’re launching She Writes Songs—a pioneering social enterprise dedicated to promoting original music composed by women across all genres, ages, and cultures.

We are especially focused on championing underprivileged talented—female songwriters who may lack the financial resources or support systems, such as the “bank of mum and dad,” often vital for breaking into the music industry.

While other organizations are doing a brilliant job of addressing gender inequality in the broader music industry, She Writes Songs is uniquely committed to supporting and empowering female songwriters.
